Creating a educational poster
Overview
You are to create an educational poster outlining what prison officers could do to ensure basic human rights are maintained for prisoners during a pandemic. You will need to clearly highlight what the rights of prisoners are, what negative practices can lead to human rights abuses and what simple steps can be taken to ensure human rights are upheld. You need to make the poster accessible for all. Around the world prison officers and prisoners will have had diverse educational experiences. Some may not be able to read or write. You will need to use simple language and good visuals.
Structure
A key skill for lawyers is the ability to read lots of information but put forward a simple argument. This challenge helps you do this and the successful poster will be one that manages to capture complex issues simply. This challenge is designed to test your skills at reading, digesting and summarising. The recommended structure for a poster is therefore:
- Punchy headline (approx 10 words) to capture, very simply, what the purpose of the poster is.
- Summary text (approx 50 words) to sum up, in one paragraph, why prisoners have basic human rights.
- Body text (maximum 300 words with image(s) to cover five issues facing prisoner officers in a pandemic and the associated response. For each one outline:
- what not to do and why
- A recommendation to ensures human rights are upheld
Content ideas
A good lawyer will always back up their argument with solid, proven facts - whilst not forgetting to illustrate what the issue in hand means for real people. Your piece could therefore include any of the following:
- Short extract / data or fact from any of the related documents
- Any photos you feel can help illustrate the impact on human beings
- Simple graphics to illustrate the right and wrong way of doing things
