Title: Exploring longitudinal population studies and their research potential with CLOSER
Longitudinal population studies (LPS) are a powerful resource for social, economic and health research. By following the same individuals over time, these studies provide rich insights into how life experiences, circumstances and environments shape outcomes throughout the life course.
This seminar will introduce LPS, highlighting their value for shaping our understanding of key societal issues and providing robust evidence for policymakers. We will then introduce CLOSER, the home of UK LPS and the interdisciplinary partnership of leading social and biomedical LPS. CLOSER works to enhance the visibility, use and impact of LPS through a range of freely available resources designed to help researchers discover, understand and use longitudinal data.
There will be a particular focus on CLOSER Discovery, our online research tool that enables researchers to find, assess and understand data from 13 UK LPS, including the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children based at the University of Bristol. CLOSER Discovery contains rich metadata on these LPS, providing overviews of the studies and detailed information about the thousands of questions asked and the resulting data. It also contains metadata on the genetic data collected by these studies, and the standardised scales used in their questionnaires. This saves researchers time and reduces the effort required to find, understand and compare data across multiple studies.

Becky Oldroyd
Becky Oldroyd is Metadata Manager at CLOSER and is responsible for the curation and management of the metadata in CLOSER Discovery. She is an active member of the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) Alliance, an international community responsible for developing metadata standards for research data in the social, demographic, economic, and health sciences, and is currently Co-Chair of the DDI Questions and Questionnaires Working Group.
Hayley Mills
Hayley Mills is Senior Metadata Manager at CLOSER and leads content development for CLOSER Discovery, a research infrastructure that enables researchers to discover and understand data from UK longitudinal population studies. Drawing on experience in metadata management and active involvement in the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) community, she is passionate about advancing metadata best practices.
