Abstract: The number of genetic variants associated to disease has sky rocketed in the last years, Hundreds of thousands of variants are linked to increased risk for a multitude of diseases. However, what can we do with these genetic variants? Does it make sense to keep performing bigger and bigger GWAS studies? Do they actually identify underlying mechanisms of disease or even point to possible (novel) therapeutic targets or treatments for disease? In this seminar Assistant Professor dr. Cindy G. Boer of the Erasmus MC in the Netherlands, will address these questions and more through discussing her research on Osteoarthritis. Which will include her work in the large global Genetics of Osteoarthritis consortium, of which the latest results were published in Nature in May of this year, and her work on chondrocalcinosis and Vitamin K in osteoarthritis.
