Title: Causal effects of education on cognition and dementia: the use of natural and quasi-experiments

Abstract:

There is hope that increased education may help to reduce the burden of dementia, which is a large public health challenge especially with current lack of treatment. However, such hopes assume causality of the relationship between education and dementia. This talk will present several projects that use Swedish schooling reforms as natural and quasi-experiments in order to examine causal effects. Further, pitfalls as well as potential of such approaches to improve our understanding of possible mechanisms will be discussed.

Biography:

Dominika (Nika) Seblova, PhD is a social epidemiologist currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Scientists at the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University (New York, USA). She received her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden). Dr. Seblova researches life-course processes leading to health inequalities among the aging population, with special focus on determinants of cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Her work to date has focused on examination of education as one of the causes of cognitive decline using epidemiological and econometric methods. Dr. Seblova has expertise in leveraging large administrative databases for epidemiological research. Her future research will include examination of social and biological processes leading to disparities, incorporation of diverse social determinants and identifying ways to best leverage diverse data sources.
