Sanjana Idnani, BA in English, Bristol

My time at the University of Bristol was absolutely vital in setting me onto my career path as a journalist at BBC Wales. Good writing is the bread and butter of journalism and I was able to develop my own unique writing style and voice while on the English course at Bristol. The English course taught me to be more confident in taking creative risks with the way I write, which has been an invaluable skill in my current profession. I also enjoyed the unique and pioneering modules available on my course such as Celebrity Cultures which I took in my final year. This was an innovative module in which we studied cultural as well as literary texts and even read celebrity moments and style as a text. This module helped me apply the critical and analytical skills I had developed over the course to real world and contemporary media moments and really developed my media literacy and critical thinking skills. I apply these skills every day in my role as a journalist when considering how to tell stories and when analysing my sources of information. I am very grateful for my time at the University of Bristol and the confidence it gave me to step into my current career.
