Maisie Clark, BA Classical Studies, Bristol

Having spent almost a year employed in my current role as a paralegal, I continue to reflect on my time at the University of Bristol, and recognise the many ways in which my degree helped me feel prepared for a career. In particular, I continue to appreciate the integral role of the Classics and Ancient History department in encouraging and supporting my relationship with Classics as a discipline. My enjoyment of the subject has grown consistently since leaving university, and I owe the fact that I remain able to develop this interest to the strong, foundational understanding that a Classical Studies degree helped to instil. The capacity for independent thought and analysis which this degree promoted helped to shape my continued appreciation of the importance of research and investigation. These skills have continued to prove fundamental in the equally as exciting and challenging world of work post-university.

As a result of the departmental emphasis on the accessibility of Classics at the University of Bristol, I had the opportunity to study ancient languages for the first time. I found these modules particularly motivating and engaging, often combining a scientific investigation of the construction of ancient languages with a detailed analysis of meaning, and continued to study both Latin and Ancient Greek throughout the three years I spent at Bristol. In my final year, I completed a dissertation on the relationship between Classical and Victorian literature. I had been introduced to the concept of Reception Theory earlier in my degree, and relished the opportunity to develop my understanding further in a closely supervised and inspiring academic environment. I am incredibly thankful to have had such a rich and varied academic experience at Bristol, and feel confident that my enthusiasm for knowledge and learning will continue to prosper as a result.
