Katrina Fray, BA in History of Art, Bristol

Undoubtedly, my career has been shaped by my time at the University of Bristol.

It’s commonly assumed that the topics studied in a History of Art degree set you up perfectly for a contemporary gallery role. However, as my research specialism sat somewhere between archivism and live art, I’ve benefitted most from the soft skills I developed and relationships I built while studying.

Beyond building research skills, the course allowed me to explore different aspects of the art industry, including curatorship and journalism. Combined with extracurricular societies, I had a wealth of opportunities to try new things and figure out what I liked (or didn’t like, which is just as important).

Initially after graduating, I worked as a freelance copy-editor alongside roles at the Arnolfini Archives and University of Bristol Theatre Collection. Both opportunities arose from connections I’d made while undertaking my third-year dissertation project.

The independent learning demanded by a humanities degree nurtured my initiative, problem solving abilities and adaptability, all of which set me up for success in the evolving start-up environment of my current role. Since joining Lougher Contemporary in 2019, I’ve written terms of business, developed organisational workflows and brokered 5-figure deals.

I’ll always look back at my experience at the University of Bristol fondly, and I feel grateful to live and work in such a vibrant city. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll return for a PhD!
