Jasmine Sayany, Religion and Theology BA, Bristol
The three years I spent reading Philosophy and Theology at the University of Bristol were both personally transformative and professionally foundational to the early stages of my career as a commercial lawyer.
Although I was already considering this career path when applying to universities, I knew that it is possible to convert into law at a later stage and I decided to take the opportunity to pursue an education in philosophy and theology - subjects in which I also had a keen interest and which are, in many ways, interwoven with the law.
The skills I developed during the course of my degree have been of instrumental in the early stages of my career - as, indeed, I believe they would be in a wide range of professional endeavours and are in life more broadly. These skills include thinking critically, constructing structured arguments, engaging in productive debate with - and seeing things from the point of view of - others with whom I may be more or less aligned, and expressing myself clearly both verbally and in writing. I find myself drawing on these skills daily and am grateful to have had the opportunity to lay these foundations in the academically challenging, welcoming and rewarding academic community of the University of Bristol.
With so much to get involved with beyond academic study – both at the University and in Bristol more broadly – my time in the city was culturally rich and full of experiences that gave me a greater understanding and appreciation of people, art, music, and community, to name but a few.
