My time at Bristol has been invaluable and has prepared me well for my current job at Max Minerva’s, an independent bookshop in Clifton. One of my favourite parts about the English course was its breadth and scope: our modules outlining literature from 1100 to the present day have enabled me to gain a vast understanding of literature across time and interrogate how it has evolved. I am the manager and events coordinator of an independent bookshop in Bristol, and so I use the skills acquired from my degree every single day! When I give out book recommendations to customers, I look back on the titles I covered throughout my BA for inspiration. To run a book club and host and interview authors at our events, I use my analytical and critical skills, acquired through years of essay writing, to dissect the book(s) and create questions that will stimulate discussions among the group. Like in university seminars, everyone approaches literature from their own experience, taking something different from the same book. I love that I can continue to engage in these stimulating discussions and learn more about literature that I may not have otherwise considered, if not through sharing with others. On our quieter days, I also read at work, which is a huge plus! These are a few examples of the myriad of ways my degree continues to be relevant and applicable in my daily routine.
