Cicely Walmsley, BA in History, Bristol

I loved studying History at the University of Bristol. You can see the impact of this course in my current work as a film Producer at Latent Pictures.

The unit options were super varied, I studied medical history, sexual history, history of the moving image/photos as well as translation history specific to Medieval Bristol. The way into these subjects was through social history - stories of people and society. I realised I had a love for storytelling, understanding how society and communities come together to create these moments in time. Storytelling is now what I do in my day-to-day work as a producer. I find the stories the clients I work with need and want to tell, and I do so through film.

The lecturers I had during my time at Bristol were incredibly passionate and cared so deeply about the subjects they taught. This kept my passion and desire to do something I love alive. It also helped me to understand the environments that get the best work out of me, and I’m now extremely lucky to work on a team of equally passionate filmmakers.

I was also lucky to be in the second year on the course where a practical dissertation option was offered. This meant that rather than writing the usual essay, I made a documentary about the historical perceptions of cancer in the UK and how this has shaped our current fear of the disease. This helped confirm for me that while I love history, and enjoy essay writing, I am most comfortable exploring the past and telling these stories creatively. It gave me the final push to pivot into the world of Film and TV. Today I am telling sociological stories in an ethical way with a passionate team, and we just wrapped on my first co-directed and self-produced historical documentary
