Equality, diversity and inclusion

In the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, equity, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of who we are and what we strive to become. Together we’re building a culture that actively values difference, challenges inequity, and empowers all staff and students to reach their potential.

EDI in the Faculty

Everyone who learns, works or visits here should feel they belong. That means being treated with respect, having fair access to opportunities, and being encouraged to grow and succeed.

Our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion is embedded at every level. It’s shaped by the work of school EDI committees, the Faculty EDI Committee, and affiliated groups – and strengthened by the shared efforts of our entire community. Because EDI isn’t the work of a few – it’s for all of us.

We’re also proud to support the Athena SWAN Charter and the vital work of advancing gender equity in science and academia.

Our EDI Priorities

Our Faculty Strategy sets out clear priorities that guide our work and ensure equity, diversity and inclusion are embedded across everything we do. These priorities shape actions at faculty and school levels, and reflect our commitment to meaningful, lasting change.

We focus on three interconnected areas:

  • Diversity of Representation
We aim to amplify the visibility of diverse individuals and experiences across our community – in our communications, teaching, research and public engagement. This includes celebrating role models, improving representation in curriculum and research, and sharing the stories that reflect the breadth of our faculty.

  • Culture of Belonging
We are working to build an environment where everyone feels valued, safe and included. This means equipping our community with the skills to recognise and address unacceptable behaviours, embedding inclusive practices in everyday work, and sharing responsibility for change. Recognition and celebration of progress are key to sustaining this culture.

  • Equitable Access and Partnerships
We are committed to ensuring that everyone has fair access to opportunities, support and infrastructure – and to addressing structural inequities. Our actions include embedding anti-racist principles, closing degree-awarding gaps, improving digital and physical accessibility, and building strong civic and public engagement partnerships to extend our impact.
