School Psychology in Australia: Practice, Policy and Future Directions

Betty Li is a school psychologist based in Sydney, Australia. She is a recipient of the 2026 Premier’s Teacher Scholarship, a prestigious state government scholarship that supports a five-week international research tour. Her research focuses on neuroaffirmative practices and suicide prevention for high-masking autistic girls. Betty has worked across a range of educational settings including mainstream primary schools, high schools, and support classes, with a particular interest in high-masking neurodivergent girls in mainstream schooling.

In this session, she will share her experience working across these settings and provide an overview of school psychology in New South Wales, Australia’s largest state education system. She will also discuss policy frameworks shaping practice in schools, how frontline psychologists contribute to broader systemic change, and her hopes for the future of the profession as school psychologists continue to strengthen their role as scientist-practitioners within education systems.
