The Montessori ‘courtesy and grace’ curriculum has long taught and valued peace making and conflict resolution as part of their primary core curriculum. What might that look like in a Church of England state school, especially one situated in the Ministry of Defence district of Bristol?
I have been using Montessori style peace tables within my own Key Stage One and Early Years Foundation Stage classroom for the last 8 years, and have introduced it across the whole school for the last two. My scholarship has allowed me the opportunity to delve into the literature and current practice of peace tables and other conflict resolution tools, and to carry out active research within my own school. This has allowed adaptations and adjustments to be made with the aim to better support pupils’ ‘peace making’.
During this presentation I will share some of what my research has highlighted and how we as a school have responded to further the aims of ‘peace making’ within the school.
