About the event

You are warmly invited to the launch of our book entitled ‘Can Higher Education be Decolonised: A Case Study of an Elite British University’. The book charts the efforts of faculty, students, and professional services staff to decolonise the university within the context of the Black Lives Matter movement and the toppling of the statue of Edward Colston. It considers what it means to decolonise a university such as Bristol, marked by its historical links to colonialism and the trade in enslaved peoples.

The book reflects on the opportunities and challenges of transforming teaching and research, tackling institutionalised racism, and seeking to implement forms of reparative justice within the university and the City of Bristol. Members of the Bristol University Decolonial Collective will present key ideas from the book and discuss them in relation to the ongoing challenges faced in advancing a decolonising agenda in HE.

Responding to the book will be Professor Tansy Jessop, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Dr Divine Fuh, Director of the Institute for Humanities Africa (HUMA) at the University of Cape Town, and a representative from the Bristol Students' Union.

A buffet lunch will be provided.
