Talk on research impact with Dr Julie Bayley - Making a meaningful difference to society: Taking an impact literate approach to driving research-based change

17 January 2024, 1.00 PM - 17 January 2024, 2.00 PM

Dr Julie Bayley

Hybrid event (viewing only) 4.10 School of Education, 35 Berkeley Square

This talk is for anyone unsure, nervous, scared or lost around research impact.  This is not a talk to listen to, but an experience to help shape our values and experiences through our research towards making the difference we want to see in the world.  Julie speaks about impact and empowers her audience through laughter and warmth and participants emerge with more understanding about what impact means for them, rather than what impact means in technical or managerial terms.

No registration needed. Please feel free to bring your lunch along.

Making a meaningful difference to society: Taking an impact literate approach to driving research-based change

Impact - most simply defined as the ‘provable benefits of research in the real world’ -  has become an increasingly core part of the research landscape in recent years. Impact features in the requirements for many funders and national assessments, is reflected in Global Sustainable Development Goals, and for many forms a core purpose of their academic life.  We have a huge opportunity to contribute to societal change, but with so many potential ways to make a difference and so many competing pressures in academia, it can sometimes be difficult to know what paths to take. A key way to address this is to take an impact literate approach (Bayley and Phipps, 2017 & 2019) developing a  critical understanding of the why, how, who and what of impact, to be able to make good judgements and drive collaboratively towards meaningful change.

Speaker: Dr Julie Bayley (Director of Research Impact Development at the University of Lincoln and author of Creating Meaningful Impact)
