The Economics Club Mumbai is a non-profit organisation that delivers economics festivals, offers careers guidance and shares information with students on study options in India and abroad. It aims to expand the appeal of economics to students who might not have otherwise considered the subject.
As part of its ‘Transformative Educational Experience Programme’, the Economics Club Mumbai brought a delegation of nearly 40 people to visit Bristol, during its UK tour in May. Students were given an academic talk by Professor Sarah Smith OBE, had lunch at the University’s Global Lounge and toured facilities on campus. They also enjoyed time exploring the city and its landmarks.
Academic leaders also met with members of the Economics Network – an organisation hosted by the University of Bristol that helps improve economics teaching in universities across the UK and beyond.
School of Economics International Director, Jahir Islam said: “It’s been a pleasure to host these students, so that they get to experience some of our teaching and find out what economics is all about. The students have been very enthusiastic with lots of questions. They have good intuition, which is what’s needed to learn economics – it’s not just about theories and models.”
Dr Shashi Panikar, President of the Economics Club Mumbai added: “We take students and parents to the top universities and show them ‘good education’ – so they make an intelligent, right choice. Bristol is a wonderful place. I always wanted to visit – it’s a beautiful city.”
