Filmmaking for Research
Do you want to explore what filmmaking could do for you in your research? The Brigstow Institute is offering free places on a short, practical course to a small group of academic researchers at the University of Bristol.
We all know that video is great for communicating outcomes, but have you thought about developing video-based creative methods that would empower you to collect data in new ways? This course will uncover what video can offer your research and help you get started with practical skills using readily available technologies. You will come away with a mini-film that you've shot, edited by your tutors.
Tutors: Dr Tot Foster is a researcher in the School of Education focusing on creative methods and empowering community voice through video. Jackie Waldock is a BAFTA award-winning documentary producer specialising in health and society.
Brigstow Institute are offering seven, free places on this course to academic staff on Pathways 1, 2 and 3 at the University of Bristol. We are particularly interested in researchers who might not have had the opportunity to use filmmaking as a research method before, such as those in STEM disciplines, although applications are welcome from other disciplines. You will need to bring a smart phone, with a working camera and video recording function. The course is aimed at those with no previous filmmaking experience, but you will need to have had involvement in a research project.
This course will be taught to a small group over two sessions. Participants will need to attend both sessions. The sessions will run:
- Wednesday 8 January 2025, 12.15 – 5pm (including a catered lunch)
- Wednesday 15 January 2025, 12.15 – 5pm (including a catered lunch)
