Foreword from the Subject Editor
As Subject Editor for Ancient History and Classics, I am delighted to present the following articles. Our goal from the beginning was to publish a representative sample of the department’s student body, and on a variety of topics which resonate with the scholarship of 2021 and link to the ancient world. As you will see, there are articles from each year of undergraduate study, a 50/50 gender split, and a wide range of subjects touched upon.
Edmund Bauly’s article is a piece of metascholarship which examines the issue of canonicity in classics and suggests how the field may move forward. It comes at a time when researchers and pedagogues re-evaluate curricula and the exclusion of marginalised voices from the canon(s).
Billy Duff’s article on cultural creolisation is a careful inquiry into the processes through which ancient Greek society and culture interacted and synthesised with others. He justifies his choice of model and uses two bilingual inscriptions as a basis for his interpretation.
Lara Powell’s article examines the role of women in ancient Greece and is the only article in our subject to primarily examine visual sources. She does so succinctly, and her exegeses are insightful whilst addressing potential counterarguments.
Emily Tubb, who studies English alongside classical studies, writes a compelling and wide-ranging article on Eros and illness. She explores Greek lyric, Latin love elegy, 20th-century Chilean poetry, and medical humanities vis-à-vis Audre Lorde, HIV/AIDS, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
I extend my gratitude to the Senior-Editors-in-Chief, who have orchestrated this journal. Also to every member of the subject board who have been a joy to work, collaborate, and chat with. Finally, the authors, whose articles have been a pleasure to read and a great source of learning.
