Justin Williams, University of Bristol
Room G16, Victoria Rooms, Department of Music
With James McNally, Adam de Paor-Evans, Krissy Kriss, Turoe
As part of the AHRC 'Fifth Element' project (PI: Justin Williams), and Rhythm Obscura, we are pleased to launch the third issue of the hip-hop zine HEADZ-zINe' which deals specifically with Bristol's hip-hop history. Curated by Adam de Paor-Evans and James McNally, this issue reveals hidden histories, photos and images rarely seen yet fundamental to the development of the so-called 'Bristol sound'. This talk will involve McNally and de Paor-Evans in conversation with artists Turoe and Krissy Kriss. The talk will explore themes of identity, growth, ethos and approach to hip-hop in Bristol as it evolved through the 1980s into the 1990s, and will also cover the making of the zine itself and the inherent collaborative processes within the practitioner-academic relationship. Free copies of the zine will be available.
