Stories from the Stage: Celebrating Modern Theatre

6 June 2025, 6.00 PM - 6 June 2025, 9.00 PM

Arts Complex, 7 Woodland Road

The stage is set; the lights are down. A familiar tale is about to unfold, one that audiences have seen and adored for centuries. What is it about retellings that we find so compelling? How are today’s artists presenting old stories in new ways? And what are the leading voices in modern theatre doing to inspire the next generation?

Bristol in Conversation returns for another inspiring panel discussion with University of Bristol alumni and experts as they explore new and emerging ideas in contemporary theatre. After the panel, guests will be invited to carry on the conversation over refreshments and explore treasures from the University’s Theatre Collection.

Book tickets here.

Speakers

We are delighted to welcome the following members of the University community to the stage:

Sir Gregory Doran (BA 1980, Hon DLitt 2011), former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company

Heidi Vaughan (BA 2005), Artistic Director and CEO of Tobacco Factory Theatres

Polly Davis (MSc 2012), Executive Director of Ad Infinitum

Dr Kirsty Sedgman, cultural studies scholar at the University of Bristol Department of Theatre

The University of Bristol Theatre Collection will also be on hand to show guests a selection of treasures from their archives. Founded in 1951, the Collection is one of the world’s largest archives of British theatre history holding artworks, costumes, programmes and more. On the night, staff from the Collection will invite guests to play with ‘Making A Scene’, a workshop-in-a-box that uses 3D augmented reality (AR) technology to help bring the art of theatre production to life for young people.
