Steroid Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome

Steroid Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome (SRNS) is a rare disease, with a disproportionately huge impact on patients and NHS resources. In the UK there are only an estimated 3-400 prevalent patients in the paediatric population and approximaly 10,000 adults. However, the disease is chronic, unremitting, and at best only partially treated by long-term, toxic immunosuppression. Over 50% of patients develop end stage renal disease (ESRD) within 5 years of diagnosis, requiring dialysis and transplantation. Tragically, of those transplanted up to 50% develop recurrence of the original disease in the new kidney, repeating the cycle of immunosuppression and renal decline.
