University-Wide Language Programme
The University-Wide Language Programme (UWLP) offers all current undergraduate students the opportunity to learn a modern language as part of their course.
The units allow you to start at the right level for you - from beginners to advanced.
UWLP courses are available to any current undergraduate student who has "open units", or the specified option to take UWLP units, as part of their degree.
Some courses are tailored to the needs of students intending to study abroad as a compulsory part of their degree programme (for example, "Study Abroad in a Modern Language").
Register for open units
Returning students in 2024/25 must contact their Home School in the first instance to be given access to a registration form.
Registration for new students in 2024/25 will be coordinated by their Home School and will take place before the start of the academic term.

Programmes
The School of Modern Languages provides UWLP units for the following programmes:
Study Abroad in a Modern Language
A range of language units for intermediate and advanced learners. Beginners' units are available, but students should discuss this with their home school to ensure they are able to reach the language requirements for their programme. All units are fully accredited and worth 20 credit points and are taught over a 23-week period from October to May.
For: Students from Engineering, Science, and Social Science and Law Faculties who are spending the third year of an undergraduate degree in Europe.
Languages available: French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
If you are a native speaker of any of the languages on offer you are not permitted to study that language.

Computers and learning materials such as foreign magazines are available to UWLP students in the School Common Room, 17 Woodland Road. Two further computer rooms (G95 and G89, 19 Woodland Road) are also accessible to all UWLP students when not being used for teaching.
