Welcome to the School of Modern Languages

At Bristol we offer stimulating degree programmes in a lively and supportive environment covering all aspects of language studies, giving you a thorough knowledge of present-day language, both written and spoken, opportunities for studying a wide range of topics on literature, society, civilisation and culture and training you in the skills needed for activities that may be new to you, such as translation or literary criticism.

The School of Modern Languages offers a wide range of full-time, single and combined honours undergraduate programmes in French; German; Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies; Italian; and Russian Studies (includes Czech) as well as joint programmes with Drama, History of Art, Music, Philosophy and Politics. There is also a Language Centre and Modern Languages Continuing Education department.

Image of Woodland RoadThe teaching programmes benefit from a flexible system which provides all students with an introduction to the key disciplines within language studies, as well as the opportunity to follow a wide range of options geared to personal interests. We expect - and achieve - high standards in language work, and in the study and analysis of authors, historical periods, contemporary issues and linguistics.

A range of postgraduate opportunities is available in the School and students may apply either for a one-year Master’s degree or for a higher research degree, for example, MLitt, MPhil or PhD. Language graduates are in constant demand. Recent graduates from Bristol have begun rewarding careers in areas as diverse as accountancy, the armed forces, banking and finance, national and international civil services, commerce, industry, journalism, the law, the media, the police, publishing, teaching, translating and interpreting, and travel and tourism. A number have taken up opportunities to work abroad.
