Cooking meals in your residence

Self-catered accommodation

All residences have a kitchen or pantry where you can make meals. In self-catered residences, you will be provided with:

  • kettle
  • toaster
  • microwave
  • cooker
  • refrigerator
  • freezer
  • dining table and chairs
  • storage cupboards.

Catered accommodation

In our catered residences, you will have access to a small pantry with a microwave or small cooker, kettle, toaster and fridge. The provision is suitable for preparing light meals and snacks.

Meals in catered residences

Meals are provided for residents of catered residences only. If you want to bring a guest, inform a member of staff at the servery.

Staff will ask to see your meal card before serving you. If you lend your meal card to someone else or misuse it in any other way, you will be charged for the meals taken and may face disciplinary action.

Meals should be eaten in the dining hall. You should not remove food or crockery from the dining hall. You should dress appropriately - pyjamas, dressing gowns, sportswear, swimwear and bare feet are unacceptable. There are occasional formal meals when more formal dress is expected.

Alcohol should not be brought into the dining hall except during formal meals. 

Meal times

Monday to Friday, during term time

  • Breakfast: 7:30 am to 9 am
  • Evening meal: 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Late meals can be booked in advance for collection up to 8 pm.

Saturday and Sunday, during term time

  • Breakfast: 9:30 am to midday (cooked); 8:30 am to midday (continental)
  • Lunch: Midday to 1:30 pm

Packed meals are available if you are unable to attend meal times but you must give 24 hours notice to the catering manager for your accommodation.

A streamlined catering service is provided during the Christmas and Easter vacations, served from either Clifton Hill House or Churchill Hall.

Dietary requirements

You should have told us about food allergies during your online induction. If your requirements have changed, please contact and we will update your record and inform your halls of residence.
