The main source of funding for undergraduate Medical, Dentistry and Veterinary Science students is the Maintenance Loan for living costs.

NHS Bursaries

Five or six year course

Undergraduate Medical and Dental students living in England and Wales on a standard five or six year course, are eligible for a means-tested NHS bursary and help with their tuition fees in their fifth and further years of study. Students can also apply for a reduced rate Maintenance Loan for living costs from their Local Authority.

Four year (graduate entry) course

Undergraduate Medical and Dental students living in England and Wales on the four year graduate-entry medical programmes, will be eligible for the NHS bursaries and help with tuition fees in years two to four of the course.

During the first year of the course, students should apply for the Maintenance Loan for living costs from their LA, although there will be no support with tuition fees.

Access to Learning Fund (ALF)

Students in financial difficulty can apply for financial assistance from the Access to Learning Fund.

Professional Studies Loan (PSL)

Fourth and fifth year Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry students are advised to consider taking out a PSL to help with the additional costs of their elective. Students are advised to apply to the Access to Learning Fund (ALF) before applying for a PSL to help with general living costs, as under the ALF guidelines, we will have to include any PSL payments as income.

Betty Mattock Tippett Fund

This fund provides an entrance bursary for new veterinary science students who have not previously studied for a first degree.

Nita's Fund

This fund provides financial assistance primarily for fourth and fifth year veterinary science students.
