  • 97% of our research in this area was rated overall as either world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*).
  • 74% of our research was deemed world-leading (4*).
  • We ranked 3rd highest overall of all units in UK higher education that were submitted under the Exercise and Sports Sciences Unit of Assessment (Times Higher Education).

Our research aims to improve people's lives. Explore our world-leading impact stories of how our research has made a difference:

Development and adoption of national and international physical activity guidelines

Physical activity guidelines act as a gold standard for assessing behaviour in clinical interventions and setting targets for chronic disease management, set effectiveness levels of programmes and research interventions, and offer the public a behavioural benchmark.

The research teamreviewed the evidence, updated the existing UK Chief Medical Officer (CMO) physical activity guidelines, produced new guidelines and infographics for underrepresented population groups and improved UK and global policy dissemination and practice knowledge.

Innovative physical activity interventions for at risk and disadvantaged children and adults

This research developed innovations in ways of measuring activity, designing and implementing innovative physical activity programmes to identify and test promising interventions that can be scaled up, interventions to help those at highest risk, and cost-effective solutions to increase physical activity in disadvantaged groups.

This approach, combined with sustained partnership working, has enabled successful delivery of interventions across multiple settings and policy arenas (schools, streets, health services), scaled up from local to international level.
