Visiting Post-doctoral Researchers

The School of Modern Languages welcomes expressions of interest from colleagues at various stages of their career who would like to contribute to, and benefit from, our research culture. Visitors are normally in residence for up to one year and, whilst their primary focus is on their own research projects, they are strongly encouraged to participate in research-related activities across the School and wider faculty.

Benefits

The School of Modern Languages has a vibrant research culture encompassing six departments (French, German, Hispanic, Portugese & Latin American Studies, Italian, Russian (including Czech) and Translation Studies). Visitors can benefit generally from a wealth of subject-specific and interdisciplinary resources, but the following specific benefits can be gained:

  • Development of relationships with experienced researchers and access to a variety of research-related events both in the School and more widely;
  • The opportunity to participate in the life of one of our departments, all of which are home to multiple research clusters;
  • Opportunities to present your research to colleagues within the department and wider School for peer support and input.

Fees

The School of Modern Languages charges a bench fee of £500 + VAT per term or £1000 + VAT per year and this must be paid in advance of the researcher’s visit.

The fee includes access to a University of Bristol email account, library resources and access to a range of talks and events in line with what is described above. Please note visiting researchers are required to bring their own laptop.

Application and Selection

If you are interested in being a visiting researcher (called ‘Visiting Fellows’ by the University), you should make a short application via the application form on the right outlining your research interests. It is expected that you will already hold an academic post. The application form should then be sent to modl-exec@bristol.ac.uk. Selection will be based on the relevance of the research topic to the research themes active in that department. A good standard of English is essential.

If approved, you will receive a letter confirming your place as a ‘Visiting Fellow’ and the dates of your intended stay. The payable bench fee amount will be included along with a link to the University’s online shop where you can pay the fee in advance of arriving at the University.

Please note that visitors requiring a Tier 5 visa should make their applications well in advance of their intended visit as the School will need to liaise with the Human Resources department to ensure the necessary arrangements can be made.

Application Form

Applicants should hold a PhD qualification.

UK citizens or those with Leave to Remain, Settled Status or Pre-Settled Status are eligible to apply.
