Clinician participants

What is this research about?

We are exploring how clinicians and patients (or their parents / carers) communicate about common medical problems. We are particularly interested in how they do this outside of usual surgery hours on the telephone, in out-of-hours primary care centres and in patients’ homes. We will use the findings to produce communication training materials for clinicians working out-of-hours in order to help them to improve patient care. We are hoping to find 300 patients and a range of clinicians including GPs, nurse prescribers, pharmacists and paramedics who are willing to take part in our study across the South and West of England.

What will happen to me if I take part?

1. We will ask for between 5-10 recordings of your consultations that involve the discussion and management of common medical problems. This may involve access to telephone consultations that Update & Approvehave already been recorded by Brisdoc; and/or we will ask you to record several of your in-practice and/or home visits.

2. We will ask you to fill out a brief survey about your role and professional qualifications.

3. Later we may also invite you to participate in qualitative interviews: 1) a 30 minute telephone interview to discuss your views and experiences of providing medical care out-of-hours; and/or 2) a 60 minute face-to-face interview to discuss your views of the proposed communication training developed from findings from this research. We will reimburse you as a thank-you for your time.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

Many people find participating in research studies such as ours a positive experience. Your participation in the OPEN Project will help us to understand more about communication between clinicians and patients out-of-hours. We will use the results of this study to design new communication training for the treatment of patients with common medical problems. This will benefit clinicians and patients across the UK in the future.
