Dissemination and future planning event for the Bristol BRC Surgical and Orthopaedic Innovation Theme

26 January 2023

Developing novel surgical and orthopaedic devices and procedures, improving patient care and outcomes, creating patient-centred, transparent systems for surgical innovation

Researchers from the Bristol Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) met on Friday 13th January 2023 to review outputs of the Surgical Innovation theme in the BRC and to consider our new Surgical and Orthopaedic Innovation Theme.  Researchers presented data on patient information, the governance of surgical innovation and how to design and conduct early phase studies with modifying interventions and co-interventions. There was a focus on developing our research and Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) plans and exploring opportunities for collaborative projects within the theme. We were also delighted to welcome guest speaker Kathryn Skivington, who presented an interesting overview of the Medical Research Council’s framework for developing and evaluating complex healthcare interventions, inspiring much discussion about how the framework may be applied to surgery.
