University of Bristol continues to climb The Guardian’s University Guide league table

Press release issued: 30 May 2018

The University of Bristol has been ranked 20th in The Guardian’s University Guide 2019 – a rise of seven places on last year.

Bristol has also been ranked the best in the country for three subjects: Engineering: General; Social Policy and Administration; and Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Overall the University featured in the top 10 for 15 subjects.

The Guardian league tables focus on the quality of teaching, student satisfaction and employability - issues which are vital to young people choosing where to study.

The guide ranks universities according to: spending per student; the student/staff ratio; graduate career prospects; what grades applicants need to get a place; a value-added score that compares students' entry qualifications with their final degree results; and how satisfied final-year students are with their courses, based on results from the annual National Student Survey (NSS).

This year, The Guardian also introduced a new continuation measurement based on whether students continue beyond their first year.

Professor Hugh Brady, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, said: "It is great to see Bristol continue to rise up this and other national league tables.

"We know we still have plenty of work to do but these rankings demonstrate the strength of teaching at Bristol, which is testament to the hard work of our staff in creating an innovative and supportive learning environment that is on a par with the very best in the world.

“It is also pleasing to see our continued investment into our curriculum, staff:student ratios, and physical and IT infrastructure reflected in this league table ranking.

'I am deeply appreciative of the enormous efforts of our highly committed staff who continue to bolster our reputation in teaching and learning while maintaining their world-class research output.'

The overall Guardian league table is accompanied by subject rankings, showing how universities perform across 54 areas of study.

Fifteen of Bristol's subjects are ranked in the top 10, with eight in the top five. These are: Pharmacy & Pharmacology (1st), Engineering: General (1st), Social Policy & Administration (1st), Engineering: Civil (3rd), Sociology (3rd), Engineering: Mechanical (4th), Politics (4th), Music (4th), Anatomy & Physiology (7th), Social Work (8th), Forensic Science & Archaeology (8th), Modern Languages & Linguistics (9th), Engineering: Electronic & Electrical (10th) and Anthropology (10th).
