Research
I am interested in examining the extent to which continental theories and precedents were informing the political ideas of a burgeoning culture of opposition in seventeenth-century England, and exploring the ways in which these ideas were articulated during times of political crises. This has led to an initial investigation of the precedential role played by Dutch republicanism in the opposition to the government of James VI & I at the outset of the Thirty Years War. I intend next to expand the chronological boundaries of this research to focus on the Anglo-Dutch intellectual exchange in the context of their tumultuous commercial relationship throughout the seventeenth century. This will deliver a comprehensive evaluation of the provocative influence of the Dutch Republic on the development of English political thought.
