Why study Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American at Bristol?
Bristol is renowned for the global approach it takes to the languages, histories and cultures of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking worlds.
Our courses offer you the opportunity to explore many different subjects: film, history, the visual arts, linguistics, thought, and literature. You'll discover many perspectives on the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries that have shaped the world.
You can even choose to learn the historic Iberian language of Catalan as a beginner, alongside the route for post-A-level students.
As much support as you need
Language learning takes place in small groups with opportunities to develop skills to work independently, think critically and communicate effectively in real-world situations.
You'll be part of a supportive community sharing academic, cultural and social interests.
Studying beyond the textbook
You'll learn to use language correctly and imaginatively, in different styles and fashions: from academic essays to creative writing. We encourage our students to showcase their creative language skills in our magazine, Contextos.
You will discover artists, musicians and writers and discuss important cultural issues in the Portuguese and Spanish-speaking worlds. This gives you a deeper understanding of those countries where Spanish or Portuguese are spoken, whilst making rapid progress in the language.

Using technology to innovate
We work closely with our students to develop online tools to help them with their learning in a way that works best for them, from weekly online tests to student-produced videos. Some of our innovations are even being picked up by other universities in the UK and abroad.
You'll have access to the superbly equipped School of Modern Languages Multimedia Centre that provides print and digital media tools to help with your studies.
Regular contact with native speakers
Trainee language specialists regularly visit us from Spain to see how we approach language learning, and bring their own insights to the classroom.
Studying real examples of native-speakers using their own languages, you will explore everything from the nuances of words people choose to the cultural resonances of what they are saying.
Multimedia Centre
The school's Multimedia Centre provides our students with dedicated, state-of-the-art facilities to enhance their studies.
Year abroad
Spend your third year living and studying abroad in a country relevant to your degree (or two countries if you intend to undertake a joint-honours course).
Social activities
Bristol Students' Union's Hispanic Society is a thriving student-led society, organising social and cultural events throughout the year.
