Our expertise covers a wide range of subjects in Hispanic, Latin American, Portuguese and Catalan culture, and we enjoy a high profile reputation at national and international level for our teaching and research.
After English, Spanish is the most widely spoken of the world's European languages and is the second language of the USA. Hispanic Studies involves the study of Spanish together with either Portuguese or Catalan. Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world. Catalan is spoken on the eastern coast of Spain. There are well-established exchange links with universities in Spain and Portugal, as well as with several universities in Latin America, giving a very cosmopolitan atmosphere to the Department.
Regular cultural events are held, organised by both staff and students, including an annual Luso-Hispanic Cultural Week.
Cultural Week
This is an annual event during which the normal activities of the department are considerably augmented by an intensive programme of general cultural interest. This has included lectures and seminars on a large and exciting range of historical, political and cultural subjects as well as exhibitions, films, performances, culinary events and celebrations. Contributors have come from a wide variety of backgrounds and also from universities all over the world. Presentations have been made in Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan and English.
