Research council PhD studentships

UK research councils provide funding for research in and across disciplines.

Funding is available from the following research councils:

  • Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)
  • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
  • Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
  • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
  • Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
  • Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

The minimum annual stipend rate paid by research council funding is outlined on the UKRI website:

  • £20,780 for 2025/26.

Eligibility

All research council funding is allocated by the relevant academic school.
