External Estates

External Estates is responsible for the University’s natural environment, conservation and education. It is made up of five distinct services.

External Estates is also involved with the development of building strategies, where the natural environment is affected, and provides policies for mitigating losses and improving habitats.

Departmental Manager - Alan Stealey

Alan Stealey first joined the Gardens department at the University in 1996. Over time, the role of the section has expanded to include responsibility for the University’s local environment. Alan’s previous experience of managing large estates includes time at Centre Parcs where, as Grounds Manager, he was responsible for the opening of the Longleat Village. And at Kingswood Borough Council he successfully retained contracts for maintaining public open spaces when Compulsory Competitive Tendering (CCT) was first introduced. During his time at the University, Alan has obtained an MSc in Ecology and Management of the Natural Environment and holds full membership with the Institute of Ecological and Environmental Managers (IEEM).
