5 February 2009
To all Careers/Physics/Head of Sixth Form/Maths Teachers
We are holding an outreach event on Wednesday 11th February from 6pm-8.30pm in Merchant Venturers Building.
Our aim is to show the exciting opportunities that exist for young people who choose to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Some of you may have seen the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (www.rigb.org) – an excellent introduction to some of the things that we do here; this is an opportunity to find out more.
The event will begin with a light buffet reception where you can meet members of staff and some of our undergraduate students. This will be followed by talks from myself the Admissions Tutor and from some of our leading researchers as well as tours of our facilities. The programme is given at the bottom of this news item.
We are one of the top departments in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the country and currently ranked 5th in the Times Good University guide. We are a medium sized, friendly department with a good staff : student ratio of 1:10 and are based in the heart of the vibrant city of Bristol.
As well as having an excellent record in teaching quality and providing accredited degree programmes over 25 years, we engage in world-leading research in a broad range of areas from Wireless and Video Communications, through Nanophotonics and Quantum Information Processing to Advanced Hybrid Vehicle Design. In fact some of our work at Bristol on Quantum Cryptography was mentioned recently during lecture 4 of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures.
This combination of excellence in teaching and research means a University education with us not only gives students the opportunity to become a graduate in one of the best paid and highly sought after branches of engineering, but also to be exposed to cutting-edge research during the latter stages of their degree.
If you would like attend please contact selena.power@bristol.ac.uk (cc m.cryan@bristol.ac.uk) so that we can arrange catering. For any other enquires contact me directly. On-road parking is free outside the department after 6pm.
Regards
