Research summary

Dr Mihai Caleap's research is multi-disciplinary encompassing various engineering disciplines, applied mathematics, computer science and physics. His research interests cover various aspects of wave propagation in heterogeneous complex media, including composite materials and metamaterials; his work encompasses ultrasonic array imaging, multiple scattering and ultrasonic particle manipulation.

Mihai is currently designing multifunctional metamaterials for various applications including novel human-computer interfaces, haptics, directional audio, acoustic levitation, reconfigurable ultrasonic filters, ultrasonic meta-lenses for super-resolution imaging of tiny defects, vibration cloaking of sensitive components, and stealth applications for the military and security sectors.

Mihai has had a particularly diverse education which has included Fine Arts, Mathematics, Physics and Engineering. His PhD was obtained from the University of Bordeaux, France, where he briefly worked (for 9 months) as an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering. From 2009 to present he worked as an academic at the University of Bristol, UK, where he went to become an international leader in his field. Mihai is a recognised expert in metamaterials and field-directed colloidal assembly.
