In Year 2, mandatory lecture-based units, supplemented by seminars, extend the analytical skills developed in Year 1 to focus on key histories and concepts of performance and the moving image. In Film and Television Histories, you are introduced to histories of the moving image, contextualised by the key theories that have informed the production of these histories. In Performance Histories, you are introduced to histories of performance, contextualised by the key theories that have informed the production of these histories. These mandatory units offer Joint and Single Honours students the key historical building blocks that will enable you to pursue individual themes and practices in more depth in optional units. They are structured as lecture/seminar units, plus screenings and are designed for large group teaching. These units are open to students from across the university.
In addition, Single Honours students will choose up to 80 credits of optional units, while Joint Honours students choose up to 20 credits of optional units. These are taught through production, practice and seminar-based activities and provide the basis for greater specialisation. These units can be closely linked to staff research interests, but follow the theme of histories and concepts. You are expected to develop your analytical and creative skills and your ability to structure their work and present it coherently. You will develop your group work skills through active participation in preparing for presentation, performance and in creating moving image work. In preparation for final-year Independent Study, you will attain a capacity for self-directed learning (e.g. through the researching, devising and realising of essays and projects).
Optional units may be taught according to one of three models, depending on student numbers choosing the option and resourcing.
Model A is a seminar-based unit
Model B combines seminars with workshops encompassing an average 30-hour production period
Model C is taught through workshops encompassing an intensive 60-hour production period
Assessment and contact hours are directly mapped to teaching models.
