My passion is editing, and in this course I got taught editing on a professional software system by someone who has actually been out in the industry in Hollywood editing for film. All the other areas of film and TV production are catered for too, such as cinematography, sound, directing, design and producing. Each member of the class gets to taste these areas and can then choose which two to learn further. Very few courses that I found gave that much hands on experience.

This internationally renowned programme provides students with a robust general foundation in the skills and understandings required for professional practice in film and television production, supported by appropriate critical awareness, and with opportunities for individual and collective creative expression. Core skills include writing and directing, technical skills, and producing. As part of the learning process, the programme offers each student the opportunity to work on a range of short films in a range of capacities from sole author to member of a crew. The structures and supervision within which this work takes place cultivates a range of transferable skills that extend into a wide range of professional/managerial contexts within and beyond the film and television industries.

What you will learn on this course

Practical work is mainly collaborative, group-based and consists of a series of structured exercises, projects and productions. Dissertation productions are regularly submitted for festival distribution nationally and internationally. The course is open to graduates in any discipline who are determined to succeed as media producers or practice-based scholars. The programme is intensive, demanding and challenging. Self-discovery takes place alongside the acquisition of new skills and understandings. You work together in a supportive environment, where individual potential is developed and life-long alliances are formed.

The first teaching block (October to mid-January) consists of units that develop ways of working, skills in screen-based conventions and techniques, and literacy in the expressive language of the screen. The second teaching block (January-April) offers opportunities to advance skills and understandings in production, and to prepare for the dissertation projects.

The period after the end of the second teaching block (May) and the final submission (mid-September) is used for the completion of the dissertation, which may take one of four forms, outlined under the course units.
