Disability Services Policies
Disability Services works with D/deaf and disabled students at the University of Bristol to enable them to get the same access to the course of their choice and to all University services as their peers, and to empower them to participate equally in the life of the University.
Our principles of service are:
- Independence: Disability Services works with D/deaf and disabled students to promote their ability to act independently in their university experience and beyond.
- Dignity:The work of Disability Services is underpinned by University policy on equality and diversity. In providing direct services to D/deaf and disabled students, and in enabling access to other services for them, Disability Services will act at all times in ways that promote and protect the dignity and equality of deaf and disabled students, regardless of gender, age, race, culture, sexual orientation or class, and their use of language and their chosen identity.
- University-wide participation: D/deaf and disabled students can apply to any course for which they are eligible, and have the same right of access to all aspects of their University experience as is available to their peers. Disability Services works to enable the University to implement its policy of ensuring university-wide participation by D/deaf and disabled students.
- Corporate responsibility: There is corporate responsibility for the implementation of the policy of university-wide participation by all departments and services within the University. Disability Services works in ways that complement and underpin the support that departments and University services provide to all students, and do not replace or duplicate them.
- Student-based services: Disability Services arranges services according to the individual needs of D/deaf and disabled students, and involves D/deaf and disabled students in the development and delivery of services.
- Equal access: Disability Services works to ensure that all D/deaf and disabled students have access to appropriate support and advice, regardless of their degree of deafness or disability or their use of language.
