Arriving at University can be daunting for D/deaf students, but there is a thriving D/deaf community in Bristol, in which you will be able to 'fit in with the crowd' and make new friends as well as meet old friends. Below are some ideas to help you get acquainted with the D/deaf social scene in Bristol.
Sign Society: A great way of meeting other D/deaf students and others who are interesting in learning more about D/deaf people. This group generally meets on Wednesday evenings.
Deaf Club: A group that arranges various activities for D/deaf people throughout the week. The group meets at 16-18 Kings Square, BS2 8JL. Popular evenings are Wednesdays and Thursdays, although from time to time special events are arranged on Saturdays. This is a good social group in which to meet new friends and find out more about what's going on in Bristol.
Young D/deaf Peoples' Club: This is a group of young D/deaf people who meet each Thursday to socialise and also organise events. The group is led by a qualified D/deaf youth worker and is very welcoming of new members. For more information, email Ian Glover: ianglover@centrefordeaf.org.uk.
Bristol Deaf Events Email Group: This is a useful email group that posts events on what?s happening around in Bristol within the D/deaf community. Subtitled cinemas, theatre performances and special D/deaf events are just a few of the types of events that are regularly listed. To subscribe just send a blank email message to: Deaf-Bristol-Events-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and await a reply.
