Electron microscopy

BrisSynBio has access to the electron microscopy service provided by the Wolfson Bioimaging Facility in the Biomedical Sciences Building.

Available equipment

Tecnai 12 120kV BioTwin SpiritTransmission Electron Microscope (TEM)

This microscope is optimised to deliver high contrast images from biological material. The system is very easy to use and high quality electronic images are immediately available. Equipped with FEI Eagle 4k x4k CCD camera.

Tecnai 20 200kV Twin Lens Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM)

This microscope is optimised for cryo and electon tomography TEM and STEM experiments as well as applications requiring high resolution imaging or analysis of thick sections. The cryo equipment includes rapid freezing equipment for preparing samples and Gatan cryo holder, FEI cold box and Low Dose software for analysis on the microscope. Routinely fitted with a LaB6 filament for highest resolution results and a FEI Eagle 4k x4k CCD camera as well as a plate camera.

Quanta 400 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

Extremely easy to use and versatile SEM offering standard high vacuum, low vacuum and environmental modes. Fitted with Secondary and Back-scattered electron detectors and the option of a peltier stage.

The microscopes are housed and operated by the Wolfson Bioimaging Facility, with similar access arrangements and charges as for the light microscopes. The electron microscopes are housed next to the light microscopes, thereby supporting correlative light-electron cryo-microscopy. In these experiments, you can visualise your cell using light microscopy, and then, when you find something interesting, you can freeze your sample and then zoom in to the region of interest using an electron microscope.
