New AXA Chair

We are pleased to announce that Professor Kathy Cashman from the University of Oregon has been awarded a prestigious Research Chair by AXA, the international insurance company. The award, valued at over €600k, will bring Kathy to Bristol for a period of three years to work on a project entitled: "Understanding and Mitigating Volcanic Catastrophes". The project will involve interaction and collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences and BRISK.

Kathy is a world-leading volcanologist, a former president of AGU's VGP section, and winner of AGU's Bowen Award. Her interests are very broad, and include issues of risk communication and the role of beliefs in how cultures respond to natural phenomena. Her move to Bristol is a major coup for the University and the wider field of European volcanology and natural hazards. Kathy will start here in summer 2011.
