Colloid Group facilities

The Colloid Group at the School of Chemistry enjoys a long-standing reputation as one of the foremost centres of colloid science in the world. The range and depth of study undertaken in the Group has resulted in both a knowledge base and equipment resource that is unsurpassed. The BCC is well placed to utilise both for the benefit of its customers.

The unique array of equipment available to the BCC from within the group includes instruments that cover the following techniques:

Brucker Nanostar SAXS instrument
  • static and dynamic light scattering
  • acousto- and electrokinetic methods
  • SAXS
  • pulsed-field-gradient, solid state and Imaging NMR
  • ellipsometry
  • optical and electron microscopy
  • confocal microscopy
  • photonic force microscopy
  • atomic force microscopy
  • surface and interfacial tension

The work of the BCC is further enhanced by its position in one of only six UK chemistry departments graded 5* in the Higher Education Funding Councils Research Assessment Exercise. This means that many world class support services are also available to the BCC, including a comprehensive range of analytical NMR instruments, an excellent microscopy suite and a NERC funded mass spectroscopy facility.

The BCC has links with other specialist groups within the University of Bristol, including the Interface Analysis Centre and the Polymer and Complex Liquid Physics Group, each with their own specialist instrumentation.
