AARD logoWelcome to AARD 2014

We are pleased to invite you to the 11th African Archaeology Research Day (AARD) meeting which will be hosted by the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology of the University of Bristol.

We’re thrilled to announce that the conference will be hosted in collaboration with The Brunel Institute and will take place on Brunel’s iconic flagship SS Great Britain on Bristol Harbourside. Proceedings will commence on Friday afternoon (the 21st November, 2014) at 4pm (see programme), with the plenary session and key note papers. The next day will be a full schedule with papers in a series of themed parallel sessions, small group panels on focused themes, and posters, which will be available to view on Saturday 22nd November.

AARD 2014 will once more be a spectacular opportunity to promote Africanist archaeology in the UK and this year we hope to showcase interfaces between African archaeology and archaeological science. Our central theme will be, of course, African archaeology, and we are keen to attract input from related disciplines, in keeping with the theme of Science in African archaeology, such as geography, earth sciences, chemistry and genetic studies, together with art history, heritage management, history and museology. As well as Science in African archaeology we also hope to attract papers on such diverse themes as the following topics:

1.      Africa in the wider world

2.      Pleistocene Africa

3.      Heritage management in Africa

4.       Recent fieldwork and discoveries

5.      Technology, conservation and material culture

6.      Climate, landscape and resource use

The conference is being held in collaboration with The Brunel Institute and is generously being supported by the Bristol Institute for Research in the Humanities and Arts (BIRTHA) and the University of Bristol Alumni Foundation.

AARD is an unparalleled event at which MA and PhD students can present their research and encounter current research initiatives from across the African continent. We look forward to meeting up with many old friends and new ones in November.

We will be updating this page over the coming months so please check from time to time. Please feel free to contact us with any questions by email.
