Kate is interested in the cultural significance of classical antiquities in nineteenth-century Britain. Her recently completed PhD thesis 'Greece and Rome at the Crystal Palace' assesses how classical statuary figured in debates over design reform, taste, beauty and morality, and race. As a Henry Moore Foundation postdoctoral fellow at Bristol's Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition, she will be preparing the thesis for publication.
Wider research and teaching interests include the reception of classical art in later periods, the relationship between ancient and modern empires, nineteenth-century British painting and sculpture and its historiography, museum studies, and the historiography of ancient art.
She is currently working on her book: Greece and Rome at the Crystal Palace, 1854-1936 (under contract with OUP, due 2011)
