Control of Legionella
In 2001 The HSC (Health & Safety Commission) released their latest ACOP (L8) - The control of legionella bacteria in water systems.
This Code is enforceable principally under The Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and The COSHH Regulations 1999 and replaced the previous HSC ACOP L8 and associated HSE HS(G)70 guidelines. It affects all employers and those with responsibility for water systems in premises.
These regulations place an explicit duty on the University to:-
- 1. Identify
and assess sources of risk.
- 2. Prepare
a written scheme for preventing or controlling the risk.
- 3. Implement,
Manage and Monitor Precautions.
- 4. Appoint
a person to be managerially responsible.
- 5. Have adequate
training and resources.
In order to achieve compliance Building Services has implemented a Policy,
and Procedures to control Legionella within the University Estate. This
Policy and the Procedures apply to all areas of the University without exception
and must be adhered to.
