Pathology is the study of disease connecting science and medicine. Contributing to every aspect of patient care, from initial diagnosis to informing individual patient treatment choice and the broader impacts on population health. This unit will explore how Pathology uses traditional microscopic and macroscopic techniques through state of the art tests.
This unit brings together multiple aspects of the discipline of clinical pathology, with examples from a variety of medical conditions which fall within the remit of pathologists.
Understanding the role of pathology in the diagnostic process in the context of a multidisciplinary approach to patient treatment.
Describe how recent scientific advancements are applied to pathology testing and contribute to defining more targeted, tailor-made treatment options.
Appreciate how pathology contributes to the scientific development and advancement of medicine.
Appreciate the limit of pathology testing if inappropriately requested or inadequately correlated with the clinical case.
The unit will comprise of 15 individual lectures to include a Data Handling Session.
The unit will also include the following clinical laboratory tours with interactive sessions.
1. Histopathology lab
2. Cytology lab
3. Stem cell handling
4. Bristol genetics
5. post Mortem videolink.
Independent study: Students are expected to study the recommended literature.
Timed assessment to include 2 essays, one essay to be chosen from each section containing three questions.
