Description including Unit Aims
The object of the unit is to provide the practical advice and skills essential for the design of students' dissertations, for their subsequent research and the presentation of their findings. It deals with how to formulate a research question, where to locate documentary and non-documentary evidence, how to evaluate and use different types of evidence, how to organise research materials, and how to apply this knowledge to the chosen area of each student's dissertation.
Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit, students will be expected to:
- have developed a detailed understanding of important techniques and approaches necessary for undertaking research
- have identified a range of primary sources, and relevant secondary literature, which will form the basis for the project they will undertake
- have begun to formulate their own plan for research, which will subsequently become their dissertation
