Unit Information

Why is this unit important?

This unit aims to enhance your knowledge of interdisciplinary research designs and methods for reporting and summarising research findings as well as their application when reporting individual cases.

How does this unit fit into your programme of study?

You will learn how to critically evaluate research background, formulate a research question, set relevant objectives, collect necessary data, and design procedures for ethical issues. These will equip you with a set of skills necessary to conduct professional research and develop foundation for their postgraduate dissertation. In addition, the introduction to a global view on periodontal conditions distribution, impact and associated health economics will enhance your ability to identify relevant and research questions that have a health and economic impact.

Your learning on this unit

An overview of content

Your learning on this unit will broaden your knowledge in research and health economics in periodontology.

How will students, personally, be different as a result of the unit

As a result of this unit, you will learn how to appraise the best evidence and impact in this field.

Learning Outcomes

You will be able to:

  1. Discuss general and clinical epidemiology of oral diseases
  2. Reflect on current evidence for Periodontal research
  3. Discuss concepts of health economics applied to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry
  4. Appraise scientific papers and available evidence such as guidelines using a variety of information sources, hypothesis-setting and the design of suitable projects to address questions relating to the practice of Periodontics

How you will learn

This unit accounts for 20 credits and there will be a total of 200 learning hours.

The unit will be taught through a mix of different activities which may include face-to-face contact symposium, asynchronous and synchronous online resources including tutorials, discussions based on key readings and students experiences, evidence base summaries, case study presentation involving evidence based search, analysis, problem-solving and decision-making; peer-to-peer interactions involving group and individual exercises; presentations, discussion, and debate.

The remaining learning hours will be spent in independent study and in the preparation of assessment. The symposium will be team-taught by a range of academics in the school and invited external experts. The asynchronous and synchronous teaching will follow an initial timetable with key concepts and building your learning to cover all the unit learning outcomes.

How you will be assessed

Tasks which help you learn and prepare you for summative tasks (formative):

A formative mock practice in the same format as the summative exam will be available to you. An opportunity to discuss feedback from an examiner will also be available to you.

Tasks which count towards your unit mark (summative):

Written exam (100%)

When assessment does not go to plan:

If you do not pass the unit, you will normally be given the opportunity to take a reassessment as per the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes. Decisions on the award of reassessment will normally be taken after all taught units of the year have been completed. Reassessment will normally be in a similar format to the original assessment that has been failed.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. ORDSM0054).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the University Workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
